What is research?
By: Leedy/ormrod
Knowledge is incomplete
Problems are waiting to be solved
Always seek answers
1. Research originates with a question or problem.
2. Research requires clear articulation of a goal.
3. Research requires a specific plan for proceeding.
4. Research usually divides the problem into more manageable subproblems.
5. Research is guided by the specific. Research problem, question, or hypothesis.
6. Research excepts certain critical assumptions.
7. Research requires the collection and interpretation of data in an attempt to resolve the inital problem.
8. Research is, by nature, cyclical or, more exactly, helical.
The landscape of graphic design education
By: Meredith davis
Concepts are more important than the application of practise
Students with backgrounds in other subjects offer perspective on audiences for context of design
Theory vs. Software...
Knowledge based graphic design is relational and dynamic
Anticipate change and take responsibility for method of change...
Healthy professions transform themselves
Graphic design education is to prepare future practitioners to anticipate and manage change
Audience and context are as important as the design itself
Research agenda...engage audience as co-creators....provide research informing others...
Consider the mentoring of future administrators
Graphic design education as a liberal art: design and knowledge in the university and the "real world"
By: Gunnar swanson
Consider graphic design as a liberal art
Liberal arts are: not mechanical, not utilitarian, would not restrict the mind, studied for intrinsic value.
Current liberal arts: grammar, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy
University's provide life training to make more intelligent productive members of society
Graphic design education is vocational training
Create adaptable students
Design should be about meaning and the creation of meaning
Graphic design is about persuasion
Design as a liberal arts vs. Design + liberal arts...
Interior design students should also study marriage & family, sociology, etc...
Other fields can provide basic consideration for design issues
Most professional education begins with general knowledge concluding with specialization
Does design offer anything besides a job?
Design bridges fields as diverse as engineering, marketing, education, & psycology
